Author(s): Nisha Rani, Shirin Akhtar, Manju Kumari

Taking 36 brinjal genotypes with different fruit colours as experiment material, the biochemical and biophysical contents during development process were determined and the correlations between different contents and shoot and fruit borer infestation both on number and weight basis were analysed. The results indicated that leaf trichome density showed strong negative correlation with percent shoot borer infestation and percent fruit borer infestation both by number and weight. Also, diameter of fruit had a positive correlation with percent shoot borer infestation and strong positive correlation with fruit borer infestation both by number and weight and fruit length had a strong negative effect on fruit borer infestation by number and weight.Number of fruits per plant was negatively correlated with per cent fruit infestation.Among biochemical traits, polyphenol oxidase activity revealed negative correlation with percent fruit borer infestation by number. Total phenolic content of fruit showed significant inverse correlation with per cent fruit borer infestation by number and weight. Total sugars exhibited positive correlation with FSB infestation.
